Billy Zach is back. Two years after the “Interferer” EP, the Hamburg-based band is releasing a new album "A Little Hope".
With “A Little Hope”, the band led by singer-songwriter Max Zacherl puts the theme of hope front and center. And indeed: The album, featuring a cover art based on a painting by artist Tobias Cohrs, begins on an optimistic note. A driving mandolin makes its way forward, and a second guitar joins in. A sense of new beginnings takes hold. But the beautiful start increasingly turns out to be the beginning of a wild ride. The mood shifts, the sound grows rougher, and Max Zacherl’s voice takes on a more serious tone.
It becomes clear: “A Litte Hope” doesn’t aim to offer hope, but rather to reveal what’s wrong. From failed attempts at therapy, as in “Therapy,” to collective anxiety in “German Angst,” or false ideals in “Ideals.” While songs like “Transparency,” “Ideals,” and “Cede” come across as heavy, dark, and epic, tracks like “Pointed Shoes,” “1.8 Million,” and “Out of Time” surprise with their drive and catchy hooks.
Powerful drums, noisy guitars, furious vocals, and a driving bass—anyone who enjoys a raw, brutal sound won’t be disappointed by “a little hope.” At the same time, warm chorus passages and rousing vocal lines once again cement the band’s reputation as the “rough sandpaper of pop music.”
Billy Zach, together with their producer Daniel Husten, have picked up right where they left off with the “Interferer” EP. “a little hope” is the result of steady evolution. The tracks were recorded live, giving the album the energy it needs. The result is a vibrant album full of depth, anger, pain, longing, and the hope for a better future—even if it’s just a little hope. If there is any at all.
