Billy Zach
Interferer
The Hamburg-based band Billy Zach will step onto the scene once again in 2024 with a brand-new EP. After the melancholic and spherical sounds of their first EP “Shallow” and the follow-up album “A Momentary Bliss”, released last year, it is now time for “Interferer”, which uncompromisingly continues the path of sonic collisions. The total of five new compositions fuses intense anger and heavy melancholy to an ecstatic dance. Atmospheric, at times downright scary sounds cement the basic mood, which stimulates the collective imagination through vibrating basslines, polyphonic and monotonous vocal arrangements, pulsating drums and emotional guitar runs. But in the end, besides deliberate poignancy, there is an underlying, thoughtful aggression, which is present in all its components, and keeps driving the musical construct forward. Billy Zach, which stands for a former nickname of singer and guitarist Max Zacherl, describe themselves as “the sandpaper of pop music”, which is an apt description of the sound of the quartet from Hamburg. Songs like I Am You and Fall are grating mirrors to popular themes such as love and success, which are interpreted by Billy Zach ever so bitterly and as sharp as a razor. “Interferer” represents a swelling, angry crescendo – the dynamic, driving drums accentuate the merciless advance through the spherical yet punky guitars, the rolling bass and the painful/powerful singing that alternates between spur and resignation. A sheer pull is created by Billy Zach’s music and “Interferer” is another post-punk concoction in their discography, which burns brightly through a fusion of punk and noise from the depths of a wounded heart.
