After four singles (“Vier Jahreszeiten”) and half an EP (“Gewäsch,” split with Dirty Dishes), FRAU LEHMANN's debut album is now being released. The 12-track record is called “TROST & TROTZ”. FRAU LEHMANN asked themselves what the world might need right now and came up with these two suggestions. Side A of the record offers COMFORT, for example in the upbeat “Fuß im Grab” (Foot in the Grave), the self-evident longing for ‘Melancholia’ and the angry indictment of an artist's existence with wage labor in “DLF Kultur will dass wir brennen” (DLF Culture Wants Us to Burn). Side B encourages DEFIANCE: an “Alte Leier” (old lyre) transforms into a familiar melody within, “Rastloses Getier” (restless creatures) peel themselves out of sweat-soaked sheets in “Wenn es abends endlich dämmert” (when evening finally dawns), and finally, a “Testament” booms from the speakers as a manifesto of closure and new beginnings. The songs, sometimes danceable, sometimes lyrical, repeatedly deal with death. All of them are life-affirming and bright. Dealing with change, big and small, social and very private, is at the heart of the album, which seems to follow a dramaturgy of development. Reflecting on the end of things, without resignation, without pathos.

The band's guitarist, Toni Günther, has transformed the quartet's live sound into a confident, rich, and dynamic production. Vocals, guitars, bass, and drums form the foundation of the songs. Percussion by drummer Felix Kothe and refinements such as harmonica, clarinet, synth, and organ tracks provide subtle liveliness. Last but not least, there are guest choirs by Annette Simons, Romy Jakovcic, Marlena Käthe, Bedroom June, and a guest trumpet by Karlo Wenzel. The lyrics and phrasing of Fiona Lehmann are at the forefront. Audible influences include Hildegard Knef, Nina Hagen, but also Christiane Rösinger, Stella Sommer, and Melanie. Above all, however, Fiona Lehmann's lyrics and vocals are something else: completely unique. Enyang Urbiks mastered the album and brought it together into a warm whole. Anyone with a high-fidelity record player will get their money's worth. The artwork was designed by bassist Philipp Orlowski, who also contributed drawings to the booklet. TROST & TROTZ will be released on January 30, 2026, by La Pochette Surprise Records
