In this age of “instant gratification” and easily accessible music recording tools, it seems like a piece of cake to record your songs, upload them to digital streaming services without a label, and launch a career in no time at all with a few clever social media ideas as your PR strategy.
Or so it seems.
Because what people all too often overlook is that musicians don’t primarily think in terms of marketing strategies; rather, creating music serves above all to make sense of the world through songwriting, to express feelings they would never talk about without instrumental accompaniment, and also to give meaning to their own existence. And career considerations often play no role at all when artistic creation is initially fulfilling enough, when you meet like-minded people, make music with them, and experience the comforting feeling of being less alone.
Especially in times of superstardom on one end and precariousness on the other, the pendulum doesn’t automatically swing in the desired direction—it often throws a hurdle or two in your path.
Band members come and go, friendships break apart, new ones form—but that one idea, that one vision, takes root and endures—and it takes a great deal of patience and perseverance to stick with it when the easier solution would be to give up.
That’s pretty much how many, if not most, music careers go—and “Don’t Panic” by the Hamburg-based quintet wearemarvin has a similar story to tell. It took a full 14 years to complete this album, which songwriter and guitarist Sven Stellmach began writing in the summer of 2012—and, fortunately, he didn’t let setbacks like changing band lineups and multiple recording attempts deter him—until the magic of these eleven songs was finally captured.
Eleven songs, influenced by the spirit of the early 2000s New York indie rock renaissance, that manage the feat of transforming despair, depression, and existential questions into laid-back slacker rock anthems. Eleven songs that encourage listeners to accept setbacks, get back on their feet, and simply keep going—even when everything seems to be working against doing just that. Given these circumstances, the album title “Don’t Panic” couldn’t be more apt, and it takes on an almost mantra-like effect.
